Building Bridges – Indo-German Connect: Growing Together with Shared Strengths

Delhi, India | August 1, 2025 : Rahul Kumar (SPD), the first German politician with Indian roots to win a seat in Frankfurt’s city parliament (“Römer”) Germany in 2021, continues to lead a forward-thinking Indo-German agenda, centered on cross-cultural dialogue and economic partnership. He is not only the first Indian, even the first Asian who successfully won a parliamentary seat in an international city like Frankfurt am Main.

Frankfurt, one of Europe’s premier financial centers and Germany’s most international city – with nearly one million residents and a record-high share of citizens with migration backgrounds – has become a vital hub for global diplomacy. Frankfurt is divided into 16 sub-councils and the Römer builds the higher political body like a state Parliament.

As the SPD’s Digitalization Spokesperson for the Rhine-Main region, Kumar works closely with Bundestag (National) MP Armand Zorn to shape progressive digital and integration policy.

In 2024, Kumar led a high-level delegation to India, visiting Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, and Uttarakhand. He met with key political and business leaders, including Haryana CM Nayab Saini, Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami, Chhattisgarh CM Vishnu Deo Sai, and German Ambassador Dr. Philipp Ackermann. At the same time, Chancellor Olaf Scholz held strategic talks with PM Narendra Modi to strengthen ties at the federal level. Key topics included artificial intelligence, logistics, education, healthcare, and skilled migration.

Kumar’s mission: combine the unique strengths of both nations to create a sustainable win-win model that benefits governments, industries, and citizens alike.

Pilot Success in Education

As a flagship initiative, Kumar launched German language institutes in Haryana and facilitated vocational training placements in Germany. Within just one year, 35 students have already relocated to Germany, marking the first wave of structured educational exchange and career-building migration.

Looking Ahead

Kumar is now working to expand this model through state-level partnerships and intergovernmental agreements, enabling smooth, scalable cooperation between Indian states and German institutions. Ongoing talks with additional regions aim to replicate and broaden the success of the pilot.

With more than a decade of active involvement in Indo-German relations, Kumar’s trusted network across both countries is a vital asset. Regular high-level dialogues, including recent business roundtables at Frankfurt’s Römer, reinforce this growing alliance.
