Dr. Sarita Sukhija Discusses on Next-Gen Fertility Tools like Laser Hatching & Preimplantation Screening

Child birth is a lot more than a biological process. It brings life to this world while completing a family in one or the other way. But when complications appear, technological innovations appear as a ray of hope. IVF – In Vitro Fertilization is one such revolutionary solution through which parents have been granted children. Further development into this technology has led to the discovery of next generation fertility tools like Preimplantation Genetic Screening (PGS) and Laser Assisted Hatching which has allowed parents to complete their families and even go ahead in a planned manner. This is where Dr. Sarita Sukhija, Founder, Myra IVF specializes and helps families secure a happy and well-planned future.

With over 24 years of experience in fertility care, Dr. Sarita Sukhija is widely regarded as an expert in her field. She notes, “The latest advances in IVF, including time-lapse embryo imaging, improved genetic screening and personalised treatment protocols, are transforming fertility care. These innovations are giving more couples and individuals the chance to experience parenthood with higher success rates and a gentler, more informed journey.”

One of the most significant of these innovations is Preimplantation Genetic Screening (PGS), an advanced test performed on embryos before transfer to the womb. By identifying chromosomal abnormalities at an early stage, PGS enhances the likelihood of a healthy pregnancy and reduces the risk of inherited conditions. It also offers families the option of achieving gender balance by selecting embryos that are both healthy and aligned with parental preferences.

In 1994, the International Federation of Gynaecologists and Obstetricians (FIGO) ethics committee stated that choosing a baby’s sex before conception can be acceptable in some social contexts, helping families raise children of both genders. In 2001, the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) ethics committee also affirmed parents’ right to make such choices, noting that sex selection may support family gender balance or preferred birth order.

Reflecting these international ethical perspectives, Myra IVF focuses on providing patients with clear information and a full range of options so they can make informed decisions about their family planning. The team recognises the importance of supporting family-balancing goals while upholding ethical standards and offering considerate care throughout the process.

On the other hand, Laser Assisted Hatching (LAH) is more popular among older patients and has been especially valuable in cases of repeated IVF failure. By gently thinning or opening the embryo’s outer shell with a precise laser beam, LAH can improve the chances of successful implantation in the uterus. This technique is considered safe, quick and highly targeted, making it a preferred option for patients whose embryos have a thicker zona pellucida or who have had limited success with earlier IVF cycles.

Drawing on more than two decades of experience in reproductive medicine, Dr. Sarita Sukhija has incorporated such advancements into her practice, helping countless couples realise their dream of parenthood. Her active participation in national and international conferences on IVF and endoscopy keeps her at the forefront of innovation, and as a lifetime member of the Indian Fertility Society (IFS), the Indian Society of Assisted Reproduction (ISAR) and the Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI), she continues to contribute to academic discussions as a faculty member.

The vision of Dr. Sukhija at Myra IVF has always been of bringing light of life to the people living in despair since there is no greater gift than that of a child. A little soul that sets the family on a different journey altogether. With time and innovations coming along, she is growing only to support couple in completing their families and fulfilling their ultimate desire.
