Navigating Global Tariff Wars: A Hospitality Industry Perspective by Arjun Nijhawan

As tariff wars reshape international trade and geopolitical relationships, the ripple effects are increasingly felt across industries including hospitality, tourism, and luxury event planning. Arjun Nijhawan, Director of the Nijhawan Group, shares how this global economic turbulence intersects with India’s evolving wedding and travel ecosystem, where innovation, cultural richness, and economic agility play crucial roles.

Understanding Tariff Wars in a Global Context

At their core, tariff wars are economic battles where countries impose levies on each other’s goods to protect domestic interests. While rooted in political agendas, these disputes disrupt global supply chains, inflate costs, and introduce unpredictability in international trade. For industries reliant on cross-border partnerships such as hospitality this volatility can pose significant challenges.

Impact on the Indian Hospitality Sector

“With the Indian wedding and luxury travel industry becoming more globalised, tariff fluctuations influence everything from food imports to luxury decor elements,” says Arjun Nijhawan. “For instance, sourcing premium ingredients for gourmet wedding menus or importing artisanal décor from Europe now requires strategic foresight due to increased tariffs and shipping delays.”

The Nijhawan Group, a leader in hospitality and travel representation, has witnessed these challenges first-hand. As global tariffs shift, planners must adapt sourcing strategies, partner with regional vendors, and innovate without compromising experience.

Weddings as Global Events, Not Just Local Affairs

Indian weddings, once confined to local traditions, have become high-end global affairs. “From sushi and hummus bars to European flower arrangements and imported wines today’s couples want international luxury,” explains Nijhawan. “However, when tariffs rise, so do costs, compelling planners to think creatively while maintaining the grandeur.”

This is where the industry’s shift to fusion cuisines and locally sourced alternatives finds both aesthetic and economic relevance. “You’ll now see a butter chicken ravioli or a saffron tiramisu replacing imported menu items, marrying innovation with cost-efficiency,” he notes.

Sustainability as a Strategic Advantage

In response to tariff pressures and increasing eco-consciousness, many luxury planners are pivoting toward sustainability. Nijhawan observes, “Using local produce, biodegradable materials, and partnering with homegrown brands isn’t just good PR, it’s a smart response to global trade uncertainty.”

The Way Forward: Resilience and Reinvention

Despite the economic headwinds caused by tariff wars, the Indian hospitality sector is showing resilience through reinvention. “The key lies in agility adapting to global pressures while staying culturally rooted and experientially rich,” says Nijhawan.

He concludes, “Tariff wars are a challenge, but also an opportunity, for Indian businesses to innovate, diversify, and build self-sufficiency. In the wedding and travel sectors, this means crafting luxury experiences that are both globally inspired and locally sustainable.”
