Sara Vartak (Age 7) Emerges as India’s Youngest Open-Water Sensation With 36 km Historic Swim Dharamtar jetty to Gate way of India

Sara Abhijit Vartak, a seven-year-old girl from Alibag, has created history with her extraordinary courage, determination and unwavering spirit. Born on 15 June 2018, Sara began swimming at the young age of just five, and within a few short years, she has emerged as a rising star in the world of open-water swimming. She currently lives in Panvel and studies at Ryan International School, New Panvel.

 

On 15 November 2025, Sara successfully completed a 30-km sea swim from Malpe to Vijaydurg. This remarkable journey highlighted her endurance, discipline and dedicated preparation, becoming a strong stepping stone towards her next big milestone.

 

Just weeks later, on 9 December 2025, Sara achieved another unforgettable and historic feat. She began her challenging 36-km swim from Dharamtar Jetty to the Gateway of India at 2:52 a.m. and completed it at 12:25 p.m. Covering the route in just 9 hours and 32 minutes, she became the youngest swimmer in the country to accomplish this remarkable task.

 

Behind this success stands the powerful support of her coaches, Kishor Patil and Suraj Lokhande. Through steady training, constant encouragement and strong mental conditioning, they have helped Sara build the confidence and determination needed to take on the vast sea.

 

Sara shines not only in swimming but also in academics. In 2024, she received the ‘Student of the Year award, reflecting her all-round excellence.

 

Her aspirations reach far beyond her current achievements. Sara dreams of representing India at the Olympics and other international competitions, bringing glory to the nation.

 

She has already participated in numerous state-level, taluka-level and international competitions, consistently delivering outstanding performances. In 2024, while representing India in the Asian School Games as part of the Maharashtra team, she won 3 silver and 2 bronze medals, earning honour for the country.

 

Braving unpredictable waves, changing sea currents and strong winds, Sara has shown exceptional courage, resilience and focus. Her achievements are being widely celebrated, and she has become an inspiration and a symbol of pride for young swimmers everywhere.
