The sound was powerful enough to be detected by listening stations more than 5,000 km apart. In 1997, undersea microphones opreated by the U.S. national Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration detected an unusual ultra-low-frequency sound.
The source of the osund was triangulated to a remote point in the south Pacafic Ocean west of the southern tip of South America. While the audio profile of the sound resembled that of a living creature, it was several times louder than the loudest recorded animal.
This has lead some to speculate that the sound belongs to a massive undiscovered creature, though recent analysis points to an icequke as the source.
