A New Chapter in Human Courage and National Pride Begins
In a nation of 1.4 billion, few stories shine as bright as that of Pooja Garg — a para-athlete, cancer warrior, and now a globally recognized record-holder. Her extraordinary journey from hospital beds to high Himalayan passes has become a living testament to the unbreakable power of the human spirit.
On the occasion of World Cancer Day 2025, Pooja scaled the formidable Nathu La Pass on the Indo-China border — a feat remarkable not just for its physical extremity, but because she completed it after conquering both a spinal injury and cancer. Her inspiring ascent has now entered the London Book of World Records, making her the first para woman in the world to complete such a high-altitude expedition during cancer recovery.
Defying the Impossible: The Journey of a Lifetime
The road to this triumph was paved with pain, perseverance, and unparalleled grit. Once facing the debilitating consequences of a spinal injury, Pooja was later diagnosed with cancer — a double blow that might have crushed the will of many. But not hers.
Instead of succumbing to despair, Pooja chose resilience. Determined to turn her personal struggle into a powerful message of hope, she set her sights on one of India’s toughest terrains — Nathu La Pass in Sikkim — known for its extreme climate, oxygen-deficient air, and challenging altitude of over 14,000 feet.
On a specially modified four-wheeled motorbike, she journeyed from Indore to the Himalayas, braving icy winds, dangerous curves, and thin air — all while carrying the Indian flag and the hopes of millions.
“I didn’t stop because I wasn’t broken,” Pooja said, summing up her unstoppable spirit.
Global Recognition: London Book of World Records
Recognising the magnitude of her mission, the London Book of World Records officially registered her feat, calling it a “global first” and a symbol of human willpower and resilience. A representative of the international committee was present on-site to witness and authenticate the record.
This recognition not only celebrates Pooja’s accomplishment but also elevates the spirit of India on the global stage. It sends a powerful message to cancer survivors and differently-abled individuals everywhere: that no mountain is too high when courage leads the way.
A National Honour: Ceremony in New Delhi
To honour this historic moment, a grand felicitation ceremony was held in New Delhi, graced by eminent personalities, national leaders, and sports authorities.
Delhi Chief Minister Mrs. Rekha Gupta, the chief guest at the event, presented Pooja with a certificate of honour and described her as a “symbol of true strength” and “a national treasure.”
“Pooja Garg is not just a world record holder — she is the living definition of courage and determination. Her journey gives every Indian a reason to believe in the power of resilience,” said Mrs. Gupta.
The Sports Authority of India (SAI) and other senior officials joined in the celebration, paying tribute to Pooja’s indomitable spirit and contribution to national pride.
Beyond Records: A Mission for Awareness and Empowerment
For Pooja, this wasn’t just an adventure — it was a mission. Her journey aimed to raise awareness for cancer, disability rights, and mental health, and to break stereotypes associated with physical limitations.
She is now actively working to establish a foundation that supports cancer patients and para-athletes, especially young girls, with access to training, mobility support, and mental health counselling.
“When the path doesn’t exist, you create one. And when your purpose is to serve the nation, even God walks with you,” said Pooja.
Her story is already inspiring thousands across the country to fight their battles with greater hope and strength.
