2. Sanya Base, China
One of China’s premiere resorts, Hainan is home to sandy beaches, upscale hotels and swarming tourists but they’re not the only ones who have come to this island paradise. Deep within the island’s coastal caves, China has built an underground base capable of hiding 20 nuclear submarines.
Besides acting as a nuclear deterrent, Sanya is seen by many as pivotal development in China’s expansion into the South China sea. It will serve as home to China’s growing fleet of Type 094 nuclear submarines, each capable of carrying 12 JL-2 nuclear missiles and a future fleet of up to 6 new aircraft carriers.
