3. Porton Down, U.K.

Located in Wiltshire, England, Porton Down was established in 1916 as the world’s first chemical warfare research facility where between 1945 and 1989, more than 3,400 people were experimented upon. The volunteers, often servicemen looking for a little cash or fun, were never told the truth about what they were signing up for.

Exposed to small doses of chemicals, the men quickly developed severe reactions like fever, breathlessness and loss of hearing. Multiple accidents occurred, including a scientist who dies from the plague and the only case of Ebola contracted in Europe. The facility remains open to this day, testing drugs and conducting secret experiments on animals. At least that’s what they’re telling the public.
